New York, July 14, 2020 – The Stop Hate for Profit campaign today released an open letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg with over 100 signees from non-profit, labor, faith-based, and advocacy groups calling on Facebook to #StopHateForProfit. Stop Hate for Profit, which launched less than a month ago by encouraging for-profit businesses to pause advertising on Facebook during the month of July, rapidly grew to over 1,000 companies pulling ad dollars from the platform. With the tremendous success of the ad pause, Stop Hate for Profit will now harness the collective power of community organizations in a grassroots effort to call upon the conscience of Facebook’s leadership and demand they fix the platform’s policies that empower hate groups, divisiveness, and extremism.

Signees include American Federation of Teachers, Black Lives Matter Global Network, GLAAD, Guns Down America, Matthew Shepard Foundation, National Audubon Society, Natural Resources Defense Council, People for the American Way, SEIU-UHW, Sierra Club, Union of Concerned Scientists, and over a hundred other organizations.

“Despite Facebook’s huge profits, the company has repeatedly failed to stop the spread of hate and disinformation across all its products,” the letter explains. The letter closes by calling on Facebook to “commit to real and systemic changes.”

The Stop Hate for Profit coalition issued the following statement in response to the new signatories:

“Facebook’s strategy is to wait us out, but from leading companies to non-profits, from corporations pausing advertising to community advocates organizing on the ground, society has drawn a line in the sand. We are united around a common cause: stopping Facebook’s practice of profiting from hate.”
